Installing Maresware

First Time Installation

Please read and follow the instructions below. Should you have any problems completing the installation procedure, please call Mares and Company for assistance. Be sure to tell us what step you have experienced a problem with so we can better assist you.

There are a number of steps that must be followed for the installation process to work correctly. If these steps are not followed, or if there is some sort of a hardware/software incompatibility problem, the installation may not be successful. Diagnostic steps are identified at the end of these instructions to help you assess where any problems lie. If, after performing the diagnostics, you are unable to correct your problems, please call us for assistance.

If you have a laptop computer with an external floppy disk drive, you may not be able to use the laptop to register the software. Occasionally the interface that laptops use to access the floppy disk drive are not compatible with the registration procedure.

The installation/setup procedure MUST be run in a command window. This registration process has been tested and will work on WIN9x, WINNT, and WIN2K setups (provided the floppy disk drive is recognized).

Installation Steps:

  1. Determine whether the software was furnished on a CD or a floppy disk drive. If it was furnished on a floppy disk drive, then in the instructions that follow replace all references to the CD rom letter with the floppy drive letter.
  2. Enter a command window.
  3. Identify the drive letter of your CD rom(or floppy drive for programs furnished on a floppy disk).
  4. Insert the Maresware CD into the CD Rom drive.
  5. Make the A: drive your default drive.
  6. At the A:> prompt: Conform the CD Rom drive letter by entering this test command:
A:>DIR E: (replace "E" here with your actual CD Rom drive letter)

If you do not see the files on the CD Rom, (two of which are named register.exe and upcopy.exe) you will have to determine why your system isn't seeing the Maresware CD and correct the problem before going further.

Once you have determined that the Maresware CD Rom is properly recognized and identified, proceed with the following steps.
  1. Make certain you are on the A: drive. The prompt should be somthing like
    A:>
  2. Enter the command:
    A:>setup E:
Remember to replace "E:" with the proper drive letter for your CD rom.
The setup program will perform the following tasks:
  1. Ask for confirmation of the CD drive letter.
  2. Ask for a destination path and directory (folder) of where to place the Maresware software. This is usually a directory on the C: drive. "C:\Maresware".
You should enter the entire path of the destination you wish to install the software. After the installation is completed, you can copy the software to any location you wish.
  3. Ask for two lines of ownership information. This information is what will be "Branded" into each program to identify the owner of the software. Until the software is "Branded" it will only function as a demo version. Not until this "Branding" is completed will the program be fully functional. The two lines you might choose are: your name on the first line; and your organization/company name on the second line. For example:
    Dan Mares
    Mares and Company

It is advisable to have this information ready before running the setup program. ONCE THE REGISTRATION DISKETTE IS "BRANDED" WITH YOUR REGISTRATION INFORMATION IT CANNOT BE CHANGED.
  4. After the program has this information it will copy the files from the CD to the destination directory you supplied. You should see all the files being copied.
  5. Once all the files are copied, the registration program begins to "Brand", or insert the ownership information into each program.
  6. Because some programs are specifically designed NOT to be able to accommodate this ownership information, you will see some error messages announcing that programX is not capable of being registered. DO NOT be concerned with the few that display this error message.
  7. When the branding process is finished, you can copy the programs to any location you wish and start using them.
  8. Test the software to see if the installation was successful by entering a program name, followed by a -?. (ex., hash -?). This will produce the program banner, which should now display proper ownership branding of the program. If you do not see your ownership information, go to the Diagnostic section below

Installation of Updates(a single program or multiple programs)

  1. Enter a command window. All operations must be done from a command window.
  2. Copy the program to a directory on the hard drive. Most often the hard drive letter is C:
  3. Make that directory the default directory on the hard drive.
  4. Insert the registration diskette into the A: drive.
  5. Change to the A: drive. It should now be the default drive.
  6. Enter the following command: Replace "programname.exe" with proper program name. You can replace programname.exe with *.exe to register a group of programs all at once. (register -w c:*.exe)
    register -w c:programname.exe
  7. This registration program will "Brand" the program, and it is now ready for use.

Note: The registration disk is only useful for approximately 12 months from the date of purchase. During that time, updates (if there are any) may be downloaded from http://www.dmares.com and be registered using the registration diskette. After the 12 months has passed, you will have to purchase an upgrade disk to register the software.

Diagnostic

If your software did not install properly, or you received error messages not already addressed, follow these steps before calling for assistance.

Record the information displayed on the screen for each step and have it ready to supply to the help desk.

  1. Place the registration disk in the A: drive.
  2. Open a command window.
  3. Make the A: drive the default drive.
  4. Enter the following commands (they are case sensitive) and monitor the results
    1. A:>register -X
    2. A:>register -S
    3. A:>register -L

The proper responses to the above commands will show the branded owner of the diskette (software), the serial number of the disk, and the list of software programs which the disk will register. If you do not see those pieces of information, record the error messages as completely as possible before calling us at (770)237-8870.
